“It is my contention that the problem is not that gender itself is simplistic, but that it is too clear-cut if we consider it in isolation. If we look for the ways in which gender divides the social world in two, it will appear that it imposes its uncomplicated order on social materials. But part of what makes social experience complex is the fact that the gender binary is always working with and against other identity categories, such as race, class, and sexuality. And not only other identities: gender also encounters other forms— forms of knowledge, forms of narrative, forms of subjectivity, space, administration, education, repetition, circulation, collectivity, worship, and intimacy, among many others.”
