“I want to say something about opinion writing. It is not meant to be universal. It is not meant to address every experience.
Opinion writers cannot not should not account for the whole of human experience in an essay.
If you want to see something written about, write that essay. If you have an experience that doesn’t get enough attention, write about it.
Inclusion isn’t the same as universality.
And so telling me I “forgot” to do this or that is weird. I didn’t forget. It wasn’t part of what I wanted to say.”
