“When anyone escapes, my heart
leaps up. Even when it’s I who am escaped from,
I am half on the side of the leaver.”
About This Quote
These lines grab hold of my heart. I feel like this is such an honest example of human experience--how we often see our flaws reflected back to us so brightly, how we believe that when people leave it's because we've done something to deserve it. My heart catches at this final line, "I am half on the side of the leaver." How painful to feel like you deserve to be left--but isn't that what we do, by default, when someone we love walks away?
