I was kind of an asshole in school. I was the girl in class who, you know, the middle- aged, white male teacher was giving us a list of books that we were to read, and I would raise my hand and be like, 'How come there’s no African-American writers? Why isn’t there anything by anyone here who’s gay?' I was kind of that annoying, pain-in-the-ass girl in class with her hand up who is trying to answer every single question and was trying to make the teacher look bad. It made me upset when I felt there was a biased approach to the way I was being educated.
