People who doubt their own truth can never be real to their partner. They are always watching the partner so that they can adapt to the partner’s evaluation of the truth. 'No, tell me what you think of the situation,' is a favorite reply. They become who they think the partner needs them to be. Their real self never turns up in the relationship, and the partner begins to feel that they are isolated from one another—indeed, that the partner is being left alone for want of an authentic presence to relate to.
