Miyamoto Musashi
Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵, c. 1584 – June 13, 1645), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke or, by his Buddhist name, Niten Dōraku, was an expert Japanese swordsman and rōnin. Musashi, as he was often simply known, became renowned through stories of his excellent and unique double-bladed swordsmanship and undefeated record in his 60 duels (next is 33 by Itō Ittōsai). He was the founder of the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū or Niten-ryū style of swordsmanship and in his final years authored The Book of Five Rings (五輪の書, Go Rin no Sho), a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today. 2Biography 3Birth The details of Miyamoto Musashi's early life are difficult to verify. Musashi himself simply states in The Book of Five Rings that he was born in Harima Province. Niten Ki (an early biography of Musashi) supports the theory that Musashi was born in 1584: "[He] was born in Banshū, in Tenshō 12 [1584], the Year of the Monkey." The historian Kamiko Tadashi, commenting on Musashi's text, notes: "[...]Munisai was Musashi's father...he lived in Miyamoto village, in the Yoshino district [of Mimasaka Province]. Musashi was most probably born here." His childhood name was Bennosuke (弁之助). Musashi gives his full name and title in The Book of Five Rings as Shinmen Musashi-no-Kami Fujiwara no Harunobu (新免武蔵守藤原玄信). His father, Shinmen Munisai (新免無二斎) was an accomplished martial artist and master of the sword and jutte (also jitte
Thus the science of martial arts involves the presence of mind to act as the sea when the enemy is like a mountain and act as a mountain when the enemy is like the sea.
If you get to feeling you are snarled up and are making no progress, you toss your mood away and think in your heart that you are starting everything anew.
When you think you are going to get into a deadlock, you stop right away and seize victory by taking advantage of a different approach.
If you can overcome 10 men, you can overcome 1,000 with 10. If you can overcome 1,000 you can overcome 10,000 with 1,000. How you handle individuals (and problems) is how your organization will. One man becomes an army.
Think of your adversaries as your own soldiers, understanding that you should do with them as you wish, intending to manipulate them freely. You are the commander, the opponents are the troops. This takes work.
[With] my life on the line...little sissy things never even occurred to me...When one is in full combat gear, one does not think of the small things.
Knowing that mentality, taking straight forwardness as basic, taking the real mind as the Way, practicing martial arts in the broadcast senses, thinking correctly, clearly and comprehensively, taking emptiness as the Way, you see the Way as emptiness. In emptiness, there is good but no evil. Wisdom…
The science of martial arts is not just a matter of reading these writings. You must practice them, roll them constantly between your fingers and your mind. You must speak and translate them. You must execute them.
It is crucial to think of everything as an opportunity to kill.
What I call the void is where nothing exists. It is about things outside man's knowledge. Of course the void does not exist. By knowing what exist, you can know that which does not exist. That is the void.
You should not have a favourite weapon. To become over-familiar with one weapon is as much a fault as not knowing it sufficiently well.
When your opponent is hurrying recklessly, you must act contrarily and keep calm. You must not be influenced by the opponent.
All man are the same except for their belief in their own selves, regardless of what others may think of them.
There is timing in everything. Timing in strategy cannot be mastered without a great deal of practice.
These things cannot be explained in detail. From one thing, know ten thousand things. When you attain the Way of strategy there will not be one thing you cannot see. You must study hard.
