“A naked woman is neither empowering or oppressed divorced from the context. Women do not exist in a vacuum, nor behind glass, nor as a metaphor. A woman is naked while alone in her shower minding her own business, and she is naked in fetishizing media made by men for men. She is born naked, because she is human, but there has been understanding assigned to her nakedness. She will never own her nakedness publicly as long as men own the public sphere, whatever is considered ‘naked’ where she is, and it is harmful to perpetrate such a myth. But it is not without merit to teach women that when she looks in the mirror, and see her naked self, she is seeing not an image, or an object, but the reality of herself existing on the earth with a whole, functioning body. That has been taken from us, and to learn that truth, truly genuinely learn it, there is empowerment in that.”
