Richard Maibaum (May 26, 1909 – January 4, 1991) was an American film producer, playwright and screenwriter best known for his screenplay adaptations of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. His widow, Sylvia Maibaum, pointed out that her husband was more than just a marvelously entertaining writer. He was, she said "innovative. Among his works are 'firsts': The first anti-lynching play on Broadway, The Tree (1932); the first anti-Nazi play on Broadway, Birthright (1933); the first movie that dealt with the problem of medication abuse, Bigger Than Life, written in 1955, released in 1956; the first movie that dealt with the ethical and moral decisions in kidnapping cases, Ransom!; the first movie that introduced the American public to the importance of training airmen for the defense of the United States in a war many recognized as coming, I Wanted Wings (Spring, 1941); and Diamonds Are Forever, begun 1970, the first film that discussed the use of laser-like satellite mounted weapons for global warfare." His papers now reside at his alma mater, the University of Iowa. 2Biography 3Early career Maibaum was born to a Jewish family in New York City, and attended New York University. In 1930 he came to The University of Iowa's Speech and Dramatic Arts Department, where he studied under E.C. Mabie. He was graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1931, and in 1932 he received a master's degree, all the while writing plays and acting. 3Broadway He was only twenty-two and still at the University of Iowa when his anti-lynching play, The Tree, became a 1932 Broadway production under the direction of the young Robert Rossen, later known for Body and Soul (1947) and a life destroyed by the Hollywood blacklist. Back in New York after graduation, Maibaum spent 1933 as an actor in the Shakespearean Repertory Theater on Broadway. He appeared in fifteen different roles in many productions and was the youngest actor ever to perform the role of Iago on Broadwa
The satellite is at present over... Kansas. Well, if we destroy Kansas the world may not hear about it for years. Perhaps New York, with all that smut and traffic...might give them a chance for a fresh start. Washington, DC. Perfect. Since we have not heard from them, they will hear from us.
Well go on, go on, it's merely a lift. Or should I say elevator? In any event I'm sure you'll find it far more convenient than mountaineering about outside the White House.
Blofeld: Right idea, Mr. Bond... James Bond: ...But wrong pussy.
Curious... how everyone who touches those diamonds seems to die.
Mr. Wint: If at first you don't succeed Mr. Kidd...? Mr. Kidd: Try, try again, Mr. Wint.
Presumably I'm the condemned man and obviously you're the hearty breakfast.
Well, one of us smells like a tart's handkerchief. [sniffs] I'm afraid it's me. Sorry, old boy.
Mr. Kidd: If God had wanted man to fly... Mr. Wint: ...He would have given him wings, Mr. Kidd.
Tiffany Case: [reading Bond's ID card planted on the deceased Franks] My God! You just killed James Bond! James Bond: Is that who it was? Well just goes to show, no one's indestructible.
Mr. Wint: The scorpion. Mr. Kidd: One of nature's finest killers, Mr. Wint. Mr. Wint: One is never too old to learn from a master, Mr. Kidd.
Felix Leiter: I give up. I know the diamonds are in the body, but where? James Bond: Alimentary, Dr. Leiter...
Plenty O'Toole: Hi, I'm Plenty. James Bond: [looks at cleavage] But of course you are.
Francisco Scaramanga: When I was a boy, I was brought up in a circus. My only real friend was a huge, magnificent African bull elephant. One day, his handler mistreated him and he went berserk. Bleeding, dying, he came and found me, stood on one leg, his best trick, picked me up and put me on his…
Lazar: Mr. Bond, bullets do not kill. It is the finger that pulls the trigger. James Bond: Exactly. I am now aiming precisely at your groin. So speak or forever hold your piece.
Mr Bond! We can do a deal! I'll buy you a delicatessen! In stainless steel!
James Bond: The Chinese have a saying: 'When setting out on revenge, you first dig two graves'. Melina: I didn't expect you to understand, you're English. But I'm Half-Greek. And Greek Women, like Electra, always avenge their loved ones.
Columbo: We are five men. Melina: And a woman
Melina: I didn't think it would end like this. James Bond: We're not dead yet. Hold tight.
I trust you had a pleasant 'fright'!
