Richard Maibaum
Richard Maibaum (May 26, 1909 – January 4, 1991) was an American film producer, playwright and screenwriter best known for his screenplay adaptations of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. His widow, Sylvia Maibaum, pointed out that her husband was more than just a marvelously entertaining writer. He was, she said "innovative. Among his works are 'firsts': The first anti-lynching play on Broadway, The Tree (1932); the first anti-Nazi play on Broadway, Birthright (1933); the first movie that dealt with the problem of medication abuse, Bigger Than Life, written in 1955, released in 1956; the first movie that dealt with the ethical and moral decisions in kidnapping cases, Ransom!; the first movie that introduced the American public to the importance of training airmen for the defense of the United States in a war many recognized as coming, I Wanted Wings (Spring, 1941); and Diamonds Are Forever, begun 1970, the first film that discussed the use of laser-like satellite mounted weapons for global warfare." His papers now reside at his alma mater, the University of Iowa. 2Biography 3Early career Maibaum was born to a Jewish family in New York City, and attended New York University. In 1930 he came to The University of Iowa's Speech and Dramatic Arts Department, where he studied under E.C. Mabie. He was graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1931, and in 1932 he received a master's degree, all the while writing plays and acting. 3Broadway He was only twenty-two and still at the University of Iowa when his anti-lynching play, The Tree, became a 1932 Broadway production under the direction of the young Robert Rossen, later known for Body and Soul (1947) and a life destroyed by the Hollywood blacklist. Back in New York after graduation, Maibaum spent 1933 as an actor in the Shakespearean Repertory Theater on Broadway. He appeared in fifteen different roles in many productions and was the youngest actor ever to perform the role of Iago on Broadwa
[after making love to the evil Fiona Volpe] James Bond: My dear girl, don't flatter yourself. What I did this evening was for Queen and country. You don't think it gave me any pleasure, do you? Fiona: But of course, I forgot your ego, Mr. Bond. James Bond, the one where he has to make love to a…
Fiona: Some men just don't like to be driven. Bond: No, some men don't like to be taken for a ride.
Emilio Largo: You know much about guns, Mr. Bond? Bond: No, but I know a little about women.
Domino: So...what sharp little eyes you've got. Bond: Wait 'til you get to my teeth.
[after shooting Vargas with a spear gun] I think he got the point.
[placing Fiona's body in a chair after she is shot] Do you mind if my friend sits this one out? She's just dead.
It looks very difficult. [shooting from the hip, Bond shatters his clay pigeon] Why no, it isn't, is it?
Madame, I've, er, come to offer my...sincere condolences. [punches the 'widow' in the face]
I've taught you to love chickens, to love their flesh, their voice.
James Bond: Moneypenny, what would I do without you? Moneypenny: My problem is that you never do anything with me.
Do not kill me, Mr. Bond. At least not until we've had a drink. And if you wish, I'll give you another chance.
Tracy, I was always taught that mistakes should be remedied, especially between friends—or lovers.
James Bond: Unusually small for a Nymphalis polychloros. M: I wasn't aware that your expertise included lepidoptery.
Tracy: You're hurting me. James Bond: I thought that was the idea for tonight.
[Tracy has just been shot and killed] It's all right. It's quite all right, really. She's having a rest. We'll be going on soon. There's no hurry, you see. We have all the time in the world.
[Bond finds Tracy in his hotel suite with his gun in her hand] Tracy: Suppose I were to kill you for a thrill? Bond: I can think of something more sociable to do.
Bond: [about Tracy] I find her fascinating. But she needs a psychiatrist, not me. Draco: What she needs is a man...to dominate her! To make love to her enough to make her love him! A man like you!
