Cudi first gained major recognition following the release of his first official full-length project, a mixtape titled A Kid Named Cudi (2008). The mixtape caught the attention of American rapper-producer Kanye West, who subsequently signed Cudi to his GOOD Music label imprint in late 2008. Cudi has since gone on to launch his own record label imprints, the now-dissolved Dream On and current independent label, Wicked Awesome Records. Initially a rapper, Cudi has since added singer, songwriter, record producer, guitarist, music video director and film composer to his repertoire. As of 2017, Cudi has released six studio albums as a solo artist. In 2008, his debut single "Day 'n' Nite", led him to prominence, reaching the top five of the Billboard charts. Cudi's debut album Man on the Moon: The End of Day (2009) was later certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Nightmares kept a nigga from closing his lids Since a kid, I've been haunted by visions of death Such a trip, now it's normal, I 'customed the grip
Nightmares kept a nigga from closing his lids Since a kid, I’ve been haunted by visions of death Such a trip, now it’s normal, I customed the grip Think they gone? Nah, they’re just dormant, them haunters ain’t left
I be high when I'm shopping for expensive clothes. I be high when I get what I couldn't before. I be high in the club while I'm poppin bub. But I be low at the shows in my dressing room. I be low when I see that I'm a different dude. I be low on the plane looking at the sky. I be low but my highs…
But I was high when I finally had the chance to see, everything that's pretty ain't always good for me.
People think that I’ve peaked. I haven’t even gotten a fucking nut off yet. I’ve been pre-cumming for the last eight years. I haven’t even ejaculated a full spew yet.
In the business, everybody is a fucking cartoon. And every once in a while, someone comes in that’s really fucking human. I like to think of myself as one of those artists.
Without me in it, Gotham City suffers.
I'm not that big a fan of sampling. But I feel like if I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it to where it's more of a reimagining of a track. The songs that I do utilize samples on, most of it you wouldn't even be able to tell what it was unless I told you.
I don’t like the music business and how it works. All of these people are phony. They’re all corny for the most part. There are a few good people in there and I can count them on my hand. It’s like those corny motherfuckers in high school. You just don’t want to be around them. They think they’re…
Each song is like a chapter of my diary.
I always try to push myself to the next level with everything I do.
People are going to wonder why you’re trying to be different; it’s just a natural instinct. If I was to walk down the street in a kilt, then dudes would wonder why I’m doing that, they’d think I was different or gay. It’s natural for people to point fingers. That’s my whole reason for trying to…
My background is not typical hip-hop. I didn't grow up in the projects. I grew up in a single-family home in a middle-class suburb. That doesn't mean I didn't experience hardship, but to me it's not about that, it's about the future and where we are trying to take it.
I've always been ahead of the curve when it came to trying new stuff in the underground scene.
I've always felt that because I'm from Cleveland, which isn't recognized as a place for hip-hop, I needed to step it up if I wanted to make myself known.
Some people just don't want to see change, but thankfully there are a lot of people more optimistic for something new in music, even with the bigger picture like with Obama getting elected.
My whole thing is just to put out positive messages in the music, give people something that can change their lives.
