Richard Maibaum
Richard Maibaum (May 26, 1909 – January 4, 1991) was an American film producer, playwright and screenwriter best known for his screenplay adaptations of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. His widow, Sylvia Maibaum, pointed out that her husband was more than just a marvelously entertaining writer. He was, she said "innovative. Among his works are 'firsts': The first anti-lynching play on Broadway, The Tree (1932); the first anti-Nazi play on Broadway, Birthright (1933); the first movie that dealt with the problem of medication abuse, Bigger Than Life, written in 1955, released in 1956; the first movie that dealt with the ethical and moral decisions in kidnapping cases, Ransom!; the first movie that introduced the American public to the importance of training airmen for the defense of the United States in a war many recognized as coming, I Wanted Wings (Spring, 1941); and Diamonds Are Forever, begun 1970, the first film that discussed the use of laser-like satellite mounted weapons for global warfare." His papers now reside at his alma mater, the University of Iowa. 2Biography 3Early career Maibaum was born to a Jewish family in New York City, and attended New York University. In 1930 he came to The University of Iowa's Speech and Dramatic Arts Department, where he studied under E.C. Mabie. He was graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1931, and in 1932 he received a master's degree, all the while writing plays and acting. 3Broadway He was only twenty-two and still at the University of Iowa when his anti-lynching play, The Tree, became a 1932 Broadway production under the direction of the young Robert Rossen, later known for Body and Soul (1947) and a life destroyed by the Hollywood blacklist. Back in New York after graduation, Maibaum spent 1933 as an actor in the Shakespearean Repertory Theater on Broadway. He appeared in fifteen different roles in many productions and was the youngest actor ever to perform the role of Iago on Broadwa
Mr. Bond is indeed of a very rare breed...soon to be made extinct.
Vijay: Is he still there? Q: You must be joking! Double-0 seven on an island populated exclusively by women? We won't see him till dawn!
Gentlemen, this may only be an exercise so far as the Ministry of Defence is concerned. But for me, it is a matter of pride that the 00 section has been chosen for this test. Your objective is to penetrate the radar installations of Gibraltar. Now, the SAS has been placed on full alert to intercept…
[Referring to his machine gun vs Bond's handgun] You've had your eight, now I have my eighty.
Brad Whitaker: How do you like my personal pantheon of great commanders? Leonid Pushkin: Butchers. Brad Whitaker: Surgeons. They cut away society's dead flesh.
James Bond: Just taking the Aston Martin out for a quick spin, Q. Q: Be careful, 007. Its just had a new coat of paint!
Kara Milovy: You dumb, stupid, stubborn, zadnyaya chast' loshadi! James Bond: What's that supposed to mean? Kara Milovy: Back end of horse! James Bond: Are you calling me a horse's arse?
Don't think. Just let it happen.
James Bond: You didn't think I'd miss this performance, did you? [Bond kisses Kara passionately] Kara Milovy: Oh, James!
Kara Milovy: I've been such a fool. James Bond: [grasping her hand and squeezing it] We both have.
James Bond: Lovely girl with the cello. Saunders: Forget the ladies for once, Bond.
[in the Aston Martin] I had a few optional extras installed.
Kara Milovy: [a police car had been cut with a laser] What happened? James Bond: [mockingly] Salt corrosion.
James Bond: Keep this between ourselves. Miss Moneypenny: That girl must be very talented. James Bond: Believe me, my interest in her is purely professional.
[after escaping out of a small jail cell] Kara Milovy: You were fantastic. We're free. James Bond: Kara, we're inside a Russian airbase in the middle of Afghanistan.
That's too bad, Bond. You could've been a live rich man, instead of a poor dead one.
M: Moneypenny, where's 007? Moneypenny: He's on a mission, sir. In Austria. M: Well, tell him to pull out. Immediately. [scene cuts to Bond making love to a woman]
Major Anya Amasova: It's getting cold. James Bond: I say, anything I can do to warm you up?
Major Anya Amasova: Goodbye, Mr. Bond. James Bond: Well, let's say 'au revoir'. I have the oddest feeling we'll be meeting again sometime.
