Abuse is not a mistake. A mistake is a lapse in judgment. Forgetting to silence your phone during a movie is a mistake. Ordering curry from a Thai restaurant without any reviews on yelp? Mistake. Abuse is a CONCIOUS DECISION. Stop making excuses for abusers.
Lou: I guess I'm what you'd call a male chauvinist pig. Mary: She, uh, she wasn't right. Lou: I'm glad we're communicating. Mary: What was wrong with her? Lou: Well, for one thing, when she walked out of here, I didn't watch her. Mary: Oh. You mean, uh…she—she didn't have any, uh— [Mary motions at h…
Touch my 'L,' sweetie, and your teeth go to Peoria!
There is no shame in being a victim of sexual violence. Shame belongs to the perpetrator alone.
Sexual violence does not happen in a vacuum and victims do not suffer in a vacuum. First, a perpetrator commits an unspeakable act, then individuals and organizations embolden perpetrators & discredit the victim by creating an alternate narrative of disbelief and doubt.
Perpetrators commit the sexual assault, yet the victims are the ones punished, discredited, and questioned.
My hope is that we create a world where it is safe and comfortable to disclose sexual violence. But that cannot happen as long as organizations & individuals enable perpetrators at the expense of survivors -- past, present & future.
Let me make this simple: If you hear about sexual violence and your reaction is to impugn the survivor's character and make baseless assumptions about the victim's motives, you're doing it wrong.
Our work is about supporting survivors by providing resources for healing and action. If in the course of that process a perpetrator is held accountable for their actions - so be it. But our goal is not to ‘take down’ individuals it’s to dismantle systems that give them cover.
Women have been speaking up for years about harassment and abuse. 'Me Too' has just created cover for those who didn’t feel safe enough to speak up. The movement didn’t *create* the concept of speaking out. it just allowed people to hear us better as a chorus and not a solo.
The movement is about people owning their truth and releasing the shame associated with sexual violence. That is not a NEW concept. What’s new is that there is some accountability now.
Lt. Dish: Hawkeye, I'm trying to be faithful. How many times must I tell you I'm engaged? Hawkeye Pierce: I'm engaged, too, think of me as a dress rehearsal. Lt. Dish: A girl can only take so much. Hawkeye Pierce: Are we anywhere near that part yet?
Mr. Garrison: Now, kids, we're going to talk about sexual harassment. Cartman: Is sexual harassment when you're making out with a girl and a guy tickles your balls from behind? Mr. Garrison: No, Cartman, That's not sexual harassment.

I can't stress enough how many private emails were sent, by many people, and how much we did NOT want this to go so badly. We're tired. We want to write our books and go to public events and not be touched and harassed. That is all. Please.
A lot of harassment and assault and misconduct exist in a tricky gray area, which is part of what has allowed perpetrators to continue with impunity for so long.
The shaming of victims as stupid, as clearly to blame for their assaults is systemic and devastating. All this needs to be shifted radically. Starting with each one of us. I see you, victims of assault. It was never your fault.
You want to fight women over who has been more wronged in the field of sex and power. A lot of people also tried to invade Russia in the winter.
The power that you had in order to be able to do this gross shit? It’s power you can use to actually stop this gross shit.
