And books, they offer one hope -- that a whole universe might open up from between the covers, and falling into that universe, one is saved.

Anne Rice
Anne Rice (born Howard Allen Frances O'Brien; October 4, 1941) is an American author of gothic fiction, Christian literature, and erotica. She is perhaps best known for her popular and influential series of novels, The Vampire Chronicles, revolving around the central character of Lestat. Books from The Vampire Chronicles were the subject of two film adaptations, Interview with the Vampire in 1994, and Queen of the Damned in 2002. Born in New Orleans, Rice spent much of her early life there before moving to Texas, and later to San Francisco. She was raised in an observant Catholic family, but became an agnostic as a young adult. She began her professional writing career with the publication of Interview with the Vampire in 1976, while living in California, and began writing sequels to the novel in the 1980s. In the mid-2000s, following a publicized return to Catholicism, Rice published the novels Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt and Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana, fictionalized accounts of certain incidents in the life of Jesus. Several years later she distanced herself from organized Christianity, citing disagreement with the Church's stances on social issues but pledging that faith in God remained "central to [her] life." However, she now considers herself a secular humanist. Rice's books have sold nearly 100 million copies, placing her among the most popular authors in recent American history. While reaction to her early works was initially mixed, she became more popular with critics and readers in the 1980
I dream of miracles but I cannot imagine them. I pray for mercy, yet I cannot envision how it would come about.
Let my stories do what stories always do. Let them keep you from your darker dreams and from your darker journey. Let them keep you here.
Had I ever loved anyone more than I loved him? Had I ever revealed more of my soul to anyone than I had revealed to him?
Anger is as weak as fear.
Sleep is your friend. Dreams are your unwelcome guests.
The fact that I loved you was the greatest lie I have ever lived.
Memory was a curse, yes, he thought, but it was also the greatest gift. Because if you lost memory you lost everything.
I was too miserable to take much consolation just from feeling good for a moment.
God, why didn't you make us all dogs?
Our language needs endless synonyms for beautiful; the eyes could see what the tongue cannot possibly describe.
Do you know what I think about crying? I think some people have to learn to do it. But once you learn, once you know how to really cry, there's nothing quite like it. I feel sorry for those who don't know the trick. It's like whistling or singing.
The explanation of evil is a hell of a lot more disappointing than that. It's blunders, people making blunders, whether it's raiding a village and killing all the inhabitants, or killing a child in a fit of rage. Mistakes. Everything is simply a matter of mistakes.
Hoping for something is not the same as expecting it.
If drugs really numb your consciousness, they'd be a good thing. As it was, they slowed you down, confused you, kept you vulnerable to violent flashes of recall, and then agitated you and made you unsure of what you knew and didn't know.
Pride eats the mind and the heart and the soul alive.
I'm hoping what all sentient beings hope... that somehow I'm part of something larger than myself, in which I play a role, an actual role that is somehow intended and meaningful.
Truth is a risky proposition. It's the nature of mediocre human beings to believe that lies are necessary, that they serve a purpose, that truth is subversive, that candor is dangerous, that the very scaffold of communal life is supported by lies.
