So, she [Paris Hilton] was a very wealthy woman, [initially] not that well known and then she gets to mega-stardom. How? The sex tape. Which was made by her boyfriend at the time, who was married, and thirteen years her senior. She sued to try and stop it [the tape’s circulation] and she couldn’t…

Gail Dines
Gail Dines (born 29 July 1958) is Professor of Sociology and Women's Studies at Wheelock College in Boston, Massachusetts. Dines specializes in the study of pornography. She is co-author of Pornography: The Production and Consumption of Inequality (1997) and author of Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality (2010). She is also a founding member of Stop Porn Culture, and one of the chief editors of the journal Sexualization, Media, and Society. Julie Bindel described her in 2010 as the world's leading anti-pornography campaigner. Dines argues that boys and men are exposed online to pornography that is increasingly cruel and violent toward women. The exposure of teenage girls to the images affects their sense of sexual identity. The result, Dines writes, is that women are "held captive by images by ultimately tell lies about women" and that "contemporary idealized femininity" has been reduced to the "hypersexualized, young, thin, toned, hairless, and, in many cases, surgically enhanced woman with a come-hither look on her face." 2Biography Dines was born in Manchester, England. She obtained her BSc from Salford University and her PhD in sociology from the same institution, for a thesis titled Towards a Sociology of Cartoons: A Framework for Sociological Investigation with Special Reference to "Playboy" Sex Cartoons. She moved to Israel in 1980 at the age of 22, where she married and became a feminist, and then moved to the United States in 198
You can not fight corporations individual to individual, you do it as a collective movement.
Explain to me how you can live in a culture saturated with pornography and how people ignore these messages.
You cannot bring up boys on (porn) and not have that play out in the real world. How it will play out? Some will rape and become sexual sadists, some will just rape and not become sadists, some will nag their girlfriends. But mostly what you're doing is destroying the capacity for intimacy in men.
Feminists are your best friends. We are the only one rooting for your humanity, we are the only ones who say you are better than this. Because if my son is worth better than this, your sons are worth better than this. Because how dare you define my son as a predator who doesn't give a shit about…
In our society women have two choices: you're either fuckable or you're invisible.
Put the slut label on a working class girl, put in on a girl of color and what studies show is that girls who get defined as sluts in high school have similar PTSD symptoms to rape victims.
If tomorrow women in the west woke up and decided they really like their bodies just think how many industries would go out of business - the cosmetic industry, the clothing industry, the diet industry, the gym industry - and then think of all the allied industries that support those industries. So…
Imagine if you had never in your life ever seen an image of a woman in a magazine. Imagine how differently you would feel about your body. My assumption is you would feel very different. So think about what has been ripped away from us now this is what surrounds us, this image of a body that none of…
Let's be honest, when we put down Cosmopolitan or Vogue or Vanity Fair, how do we feel? Like (do we) feel 'Oh I feel really slim and toned today. I feel really good about myself.'? How do you really feel? Like a fat pig would that be about right? That's crucial because the more women hate…
We know from 40 years of research that the younger boys get to porn, the more it limits their capacity for intimacy, the more it decreases their empathy for rape victims, the more it increases depression and anxiety, and the more likely they are to engage in risky sexual behavior... now we have a…
I want you to think what it means to be male and grow up in a culture where before you can even speak, females are offering themselves to you, "Come get me! Come get me!"
So how do you make sure that those of us who are not starving, that those of us who have the riches the world has to offer, how do you make make sure that we don't march and say "It's not fair"? What you do is you create a material reality, ie capitalism, which is unfair and then you develop an…
What oppression does is destroy our capacity for empathy because otherwise we would all be up in arms enraged at the fact that there's people out there who are oppressed.
It is very very easy to seep into despair, but if we seep into despair we do the devil's work. Do you understand that? You do the work of your enemies.
Orgasms are really nice, but revolutions are better.
How is it possible that women are buying into their own demise?
Back in the day of women’s liberation, we felt that we could not claim success till all women were liberated from oppression. What we wanted was the end of patriarchal capitalism.
The buzz word in popular feminism today is empowerment. When I became a feminist many years ago, the word we used was liberation. Unlike empowerment, liberation is a collective concept which means that even if my life is all rosy and ‘empowered,’ it doesn’t mean shit for those women who are doing…
